How to Use a Seed Spreader

If you’re unfamiliar with seed spreaders, they’re fairly easy to learn to use. In a large bin, you load materials such as salt, sand, seeds, or fertilizer to distribute across your lawn, driveway, or sidewalk. As the spreader is moved, the wheels will turn a mechanism at the bottom of the bin that will fling the materials out evenly across your path. While push spreaders are common for smaller properties, more popular are spreader attachments that are hitched to a tractor, riding mower, or ATV to quickly cover a large area. Whether you’re pushing or driving your spreader, you’ll need to move at one constant speed to be sure the materials are spread evenly.

What Are the Different Types of Seed Spreaders?

We’ve already mentioned that seed spreaders can come in push models or as attachments for various other equipment. However, these aren’t the only two variations on the market. Seed spreaders can also be split into two categories based on how they spread their contents.  Broadcast spreaders focus on distributing materials across a wide area, typically at the expense of precision. Drop spreaders on the other hand focus on spreading materials very deliberately. While you can control exactly where your materials land, they’re much slower than broadcast models and are better suited for smaller areas.
