What Is a Logging Winch?

These attachments utilize a winch system which outputs a cable that you can then wrap around several logs you want to move. Once you’ve wrapped it around all the logs you want, you then pull the cable back in to tighten it around the logs. The winch typically connects to the rear of a tractor so you can drag logs or other wood along behind you as you drive. It’s a relatively simple attachment that allows you to move large amounts of lumber or logs without a complex grappling system.

How Do They Work?

Like most tractor implements, a logging winch must be connected to your tractor’s power take-off system, or PTO. This allows your tractor to power the device without external wires and power connections, meaning the tractor’s engine helps enable the pulleys that loosen or restrict the cable. Typically the operator can utilize the winch’s powered features from the driver’s seat of the tractor.

Why Do I Want One?

As we mentioned, the logging winch is often used as a replacement for grappling systems. Though many logging sites utilize grapples heavily, a logging winch has one major advantage over them: it can haul multiple logs at the same time. Most grapples can only move one log at a time, and even then only for short distances. Logging winches can move several logs at once, dragging them up against a skidder (a flat metal plate that lets the logs “skid” across the ground) and move them longer distances.

Though other types of winches can be used in the place of a logging winch, they’re not designed for it—certainly not for pulling multiple logs long distances. A smaller winch could only move smaller logs, possibly one at a time, and wouldn’t be safe to use for a long drive. Logging winches are specially built for the task and utilize a tractor’s PTO, making them more powerful and better suited for the job.
