Staying Busy on the Farm in Winter
The warmest months are long behind us, and the coldest ones are coming up fast. That tends to mean life on the farm will slow down a bit, but you don’t necessarily have to stop everything until spring. We here at Nova International believe in making the most of every day, so we’ve put together a few tips for things to keep you busy on the farm during the winter, below. To learn more, or if you want to spend this time buying agricultural equipment you’ve been missing, contact our stores in Windsor and Aylesford, Nova Scotia, and Salisbury, New Brunswick, today!
Greenhouse Growing
Most crops you grow in warm weather can’t handle our winters, but if you have or create a greenhouse, you’ll be able to get around that inconvenience. These climate-controlled facilities help you optimize the temperature and humidity of the growing area so you can grow what you want, when you want, all year round. You can order them, hire professionals to build one, or buy the parts and build one yourself!
Overdue Maintenance
If winter is your off-season and you want to keep it that way, you’ll have more hours to devote to things you might have avoided during your busier months. Maintenance and repairs on vehicles, equipment, and other tools should be a priority for you at this time, particularly any equipment you’ll need come harvest time. Any serious damage or wear and tear you or your team discover can then be handled by professionals in time to get your work done. Our service team, for instance, is ready and waiting to ensure you have what you need when you need it.
Construction and Improvement
Any buildings, sheds, barns, or covered outdoor areas that you rely on for keeping animals or tools out of the weather should also get looked at. You’ll want to patch or repair any holes or cracks and replace any materials too worn down to be effective. You might even look into space heaters to ensure our coldest nights don’t impact your animals too heavily—and they can also keep your pipes from freezing.
Record Updates
You probably didn’t get into farming just so you could do more paperwork, but your winter downtime is the perfect opportunity to get it all sorted and out of the way. Accounting records, harvest yield data, soil test results, and other information needs sorting and filing. With it out of the way, planting season can go a bit more smoothly.
There’s plenty more you can do around the farm this winter, but these are some of our favorites.
